Scoping, the work-at-home career you’ve probably never heard of but has been around for thirty years.

What is Scoping?

Scoping is what the court reporting industry calls editing. If a court reporter is a writer, a scopist is the editor.

Court reporters write or “take down” proceedings using steno writers. They import their steno notes into computer-aided transcription software that translates the steno into English.

Court reporters then hire scopists to help them save time in the editing process. A court reporter makes money per page, not per hour, so the more pages he or she can take down, the higher their earning potential.

A scopist receives a transcript and audio from a court reporter, downloads it into his/her software and edits the transcript to be correct according to the audio.

Why Learn To Scope?

  1. Scopists can work from anywhere. All you need is a computer, software, and access to internet and email.
  2. Scopists are well paid.  On average, a scopist earns between $30,000 and $50,000 per year — sometimes more.
  3. Scopists are in high demand; they save court reporters valuable time.

Scoping is Flexible

This means you can work from home or while on vacation. You can work any time of the day from wherever you choose.

All you need is a desktop or laptop outfitted with scoping software. These items are a  tax-deductible business expense.

Scoping Pays Well

Scopists get paid per page. The average is about $1.00 to $1.25 per page for a regular turnaround job (approximately 2-3 business days).

A well-trained scopist can earn $30,000 fresh out of training, but he/she can work up as their speed improves to $50,000 per year or more.

Do I Need A Degree?

No. Unlike many professions with similar earning potentials (that often lack flexibility!), scoping does not require an expensive degree, nor does it require certification testing or CEU’s. It does require training, but scoping training costs a mere fraction of what a single year would cost at a traditional college. Scopists make

How Long Will Training Last?

Most people take around six to eight months to learn how to scope and start earning. Many of the students get their first clients the same week they graduate.
